Story Time: Journey Under the Lakes!
February 17, 2018, 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
The Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Grand Rapids Public Library have teamed up to present a fun family outing each month! Programs have a different theme each month, are included free with museum admission, and require no preregistration. All programs will take place at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and include story time, mini family exhibition tours, and an art project! All programs are for families of all ages, and last approximately 90 minutes.
The museum’s newest exhibition, Alexis Rockman: The Great Lakes Cycle, will be our inspiration to explore the magic and mystery of the Great Lakes! Families will begin by hearing several stories about the plants and animals that call this place home, and how we can care for those creatures. Then a docent guide will lead families through the five large murals to explore shipwrecks, fish, glaciers, pollution, and industry to reveal secrets hidden throughout the art.
At the conclusion, families will travel to the Studio for an art making activity. Can you paint with mud? How about sand? In his series of “Field Drawings,” artist Alexis Rockman made plant and animal studies using dirt, sand, mud, coal, and leaves he collected from different locations around the Great Lakes, and during this project families will also use natural materials to create amazing artwork!
