In his work, Emerson Schreiner challenges the immobile nature of an image which does not exist in time the way a book or a film does. By creating artwork in which the process is evident; where the strokes are visible, and not all mistakes are taken out, Schreiner captures the struggle of creation in the end product. When applying this process to portraiture and figurative work, the result is an image that appears to solidly exist, and at the same time be extremely fragile. Emotionally, this may remind us of our own fragility and essential impermanence.

Born and raised in Michigan, Beth Charles and her family have been residents of Holland since 1996. She is a 1987 cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan, having earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts with concentrations in painting, drawing and illustration. Prior to coming to Holland, Beth painted and exhibited her work in Dallas, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona.
Beth’s favored media is acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas which allows for the painting to continue over the edge and around the sides, adding dimension and a surprise to the viewer. Her subject matter ranges from floral to abstract with a focus on realism. She has been working increasingly more with the palette knife and acrylic mediums to enhance the movement, color and texture of her work.
The ability to demonstrate painting techniques and understand color has led to Beth’s success in teaching classes and workshops eight months of the year. She often collaborates with interior designers, private parties and gallery owners to create commissioned art that meets their imaginative expectations and design needs.
Beth currently owns her own business, Beth Charles Art, where she is a featured artist.
