Warrington Colescott offers a dynamic reinterpretation of the bank-robbing adventures of outlaw John Dillinger. Relive this fascinating time in history as we delve into Dillinger’s world! This month’s selection Dillinger: The Untold Story was written by G. Russell Girardin in the 1930s, but wasn’t published until 1994. The book offers a remarkable contemporary account of Dillinger’s life and crimes, using information largely given to Girardin by Louis Piquett, the outlaw’s lawyer, shortly after Dillinger’s death. We will also look at Colescott’s Dillinger Series, a set of 5 prints in GRAM’s permanent collection, to see how closely the facts line up with the art.

From a young age, Warrington Colescott was fascinated by the lively world of vaudeville and cabaret theatre. Century Girl: 100 Years in the Life of Doris Eaton Travis, Last Living Star of the Ziegfeld Follies is a visual feast, combining a mix of illustrations, photos, and memorabilia with handwritten text that outlines the fascinating life of Ziegfeld Follies star Doris Eaton Travis. Through a combination of techniques and visual treats, Redniss gives us a uniquely paced biography that is a pleasure to read. Among many other things, the book explores the world of vaudeville theatre and cabaret in the 1920s, which also captivated Warrington Colescott and pervaded his artwork in a variety of ways. We will explore the galleries to find these elements in his prints, and make comparisons between the narrative styles of the author and the artist.
