Who can volunteer at GRAM?

We love volunteers who have an appreciation for art, especially those who want to share that love with others. Admission to the GRAM Volunteer Program is open to anyone with a high energy level, who are creative and imaginative, those who are conscientious and do their best with the resources available. Finally, we love volunteers who are willing to give their time in a selfless manner. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older (14 if working with a parent or guardian).

GRAM welcomes volunteers without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, marital status, religion, age, height, weight, disability, or any other protected characteristic.

What are the areas I can work?
Opportunities are available in the following areas:

  • Communications + PR
  • Docent
  • Facilities
  • Library
  • Guest Services
  • Membership and Administration
  • Museum Store
  • Special Events
  • Youth and Family Programs
  • Click (HERE) for more detailed job descriptions. Reviewing these will help you understand the duties of each department and decide which ones best match your interests and abilities. You can work in as many different areas as you like!

What are the hours?
The time you spend at GRAM will vary, based on where and what you will be working on. A shift will never be more than four hours and may often be fewer. Some areas/projects will require set times, others offer more flexible shifts.

Opportunities are available seven days a week, depending on the area you are interested in. Some evening shifts are available as well throughout the year.

What is the time commitment?
GRAM is looking for volunteers who are willing to commit to a minimum of one year of volunteer service. The exception to this would be in the case of volunteers working only special events such as ArtPrize or Festival of the Arts, where the schedule is event-specific.

Do I need to be a member?
GRAM does not require membership to be a volunteer, but we do encourage volunteers to consider becoming members as an additional way to support the Museum.

What are the benefits of volunteering at GRAM?
The museum appreciates the service provided by the volunteer and offers the following benefits:

  • A supportive climate where volunteers can perform and grow;
  • Professional orientation, training, and continuing education;
  • Parking underneath the building or parking passes for a neighboring lot during your shift;
  • Use of the members lounge during office hours;
  • A volunteer recognition program, which rewards volunteers with free passes and membership at different service levels.

Is there a dress code?
GRAM asks that you dress in accordance with accepted social standards and maintain appropriate personal grooming and hygiene. The general dress code guidelines for the job your perform will be explained to you during your orientation, and may vary depending on the area you’re volunteering in.

I have a busy schedule - is it possible to just work during big events such as ArtPrize?
Yes! People who would like to serve GRAM but cannot commit to a regular schedule can opt to work just during big annual events.

I'm part of a community organization. Can we come into volunteer as a group?
Absolutely! GRAM uses many group, corporate and school volunteers throughout the year. Depending on the size of your group, we can work out a time for you and your group to volunteer at GRAM. For very large groups, ArtPrize will offer the best opportunities. Contact our Manager of Volunteer Services to inquire about group opportunities email[email protected].

How do I get started?
The first step is to fill out an application, available online here. You will not be able to work in any area except Special Events until you attend a New Volunteer Orientation, which are held quarterly. Once you attend an orientation you can work in any volunteer position.

I’m really looking to be an intern. How do I apply for that?

How can I find out about internships?
All available internships, along with details on the application process, are listed on our website.

Are internships paid?
Most internships are unpaid; however, students may receive academic credit. Students are responsible for making arrangements with their schools to receive credit for internships. Any paid internship opportunities will be stated as such.

How long does it typically take to hear back about an internship application?
Applications are accepted through the date specified then passed on to the appropriate GRAM staff for review. Those applicants selected for an interview will then be contacted by phone or e-mail, usually within about two weeks of the application deadline.

Is there someone I can call to follow up on my intership application?
Due to the large number of applicants, we may contact only those applicants selected for an interview. If you would like to confirm that you application was received, you may contact the Manager of Volunteer Services (see link below).

Do you have a question about volunteering or internships that has not been answered?
Email Kris Shannon, Manager of Volunteer Services [email protected].
