It’s noon! Time to start the live chat with Jason Gamrath, the #ArtPrizeatGRAM Top 10 artist behind Botanical Exotica.

@AndreaMMorgan
@GR_Art_Museum @JasonGamrath what was hardest part of creating ArtPrize work? #artprizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan Sculpting molten glass into a complicated form, without touching it with bare hands. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
Question for Jason: “How did you get the work here?” #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
Carefully and quickly. Everything disassembles into individual components and is reassembled on-site. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
Foam negatives are carved for each individual piece of glass to “nest” in, and then I drove them from Seattle by truck. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@AndreaMMorgan
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum what is your favorite part of ArtPrize 2013 so far? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan Getting to meet everybody and witness their emotional reactions to the work. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
Another question: @JasonGamrath — how long did it take you to create this work? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@GR_Art_Museum Botanical Exotica took two years to complete. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@AndreaMMorgan
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum wow! that is a long time to work on one thing. Did you take breaks? #artprizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan I work 7 days a week, every week—no breaks. But it doesn’t feel like work, because it’s fun! #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@AndreaMMorgan
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum how did you select which species of flowers to create? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
I chose flowers with the strongest sense of personality, that resonate on a personal level and remind me of people I know. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@AndreaMMorgan
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum is there one that is your favorite? #artprizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan There are things about each that I like, and things about each that I don’t. I see it all as one piece. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan Each piece has flaws, as does nature, but it is somehow perfect with flaws. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
@JasonGamrath Can you tell us more about the process behind creating glass works on this scale? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@GR_Art_Museum The flowers are hand-blown from 2200 degree molten glass. #ArtPrizeatGRAM #ArtPrize

@willardO42
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum what made you decide to use glass as your medium of choice? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@willardO42 @GR_Art_Museum I chose glass because it freezes a moment in time. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@AndreaMMorgan
@JasonGamrath @GR_Art_Museum how does this artwork relate to your work as a whole? #artprizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
@AndreaMMorgan @GR_Art_Museum It is an autobiographical and emotional work, as were my past series as well. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
Question for @JasonGamrath — What’s next? What will come next for you after this year’s ArtPrize? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
I have a piece I’ve envisioned over the last year that will be twice as difficult to make, twice as big, twice as beautiful #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
@JasonGamrath Why did you decide to focus on flowers? Do you normally focus on this subject? #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@JasonGamrath
I chose flowers because they are the best representation of the emotion that I am trying to capture in this series. #ArtPrizeatGRAM

@GR_Art_Museum
And that’s it for the chat today! Thank you @JasonGamrath for answering questions, and thank you all for participating! #ArtPrizeatGRAM
