Print Room and Reference Library

Print Room

The Jansma Family Works on Paper Study Room provides public access to the museum’s collections of prints, drawings, and photographs. These include works of and European origin dating from the fifteenth century to the present.

Because works on paper are sensitive to the damaging effects of light they are shown only for brief periods at a time. Works on paper that are not currently on view in the galleries may be examined in the Study Room upon request. Classes from local schools and universities are encouraged to schedule visits to the Study Room.

The study room also houses a library of reference books and catalogues raisonnés as well as an index to the Museum’s collection of prints, drawings, and photographs.

The Study Room is located on the second floor of the Museum, adjacent to the library.

Reference Library

The Grand Rapids Art Museum Reference Library provides members and visitors access to art books and periodicals related to exhibitions and collections.

  • 19th – 21st century and European painting, sculpture, photography, and design
  • 15th – 21st century and European prints and drawings
  • 20th century International Modernism

Books are for use within the Library only. Currently two-thirds of the Library’s holdings of approximately 8,000 books have been entered into the catalog database. The library catalog can be accessed here.
