Enjoy a guided walking tour of downtown Grand Rapids in this special series in honor of Mathias J. Alten: An Enduring Legacy. Chief tour ambassador Caroline Cook will take participants on a different tour each date as we explore history and art in our community. Each tour will last approximately 90 minutes, and will be rescheduled in case of rain.
On this walking tour, we’ll venture outside to explore the murals around our city! Throughout Grand Rapids’ neighborhoods, vibrant and intriguing artwork appears on the exterior of buildings, underneath highway overpasses, on retaining walls, street surfaces, and utility boxes. The public art painted by local artists can celebrate beauty, serve as a call to action, and offer a tribute to heroes. Viewing these murals is a study of local history, community activism, and sheer expressions of creativity.
We’re excited for guests to safely participate in select programming at the Museum. Expect new procedures including: reduced program capacity to ensure distancing, face covering requirements, regular sanitization and cleaning, and restricting the sharing of tools/materials among participants.
