MICHIGAN ARTIST SERIES
Michigan-based artist Ray Materson (b. 1954, Connecticut) is nationally recognized for his intimate, hand-stitched embroideries made from unraveled socks. Materson first turned to embroidery in his thirties while serving time in prison, where the act of making became both a respite from his environment and a means of personal rebirth. Inspired by memories of his grandmother quietly embroidering on her porch, he began by sewing sports patches and flags for fellow inmates. Over time, his practice expanded to encompass portraits, memories, Americana, nature, and imaginative scenes, each rendered with striking detail and emotional depth. Materson’s embroideries are lush in their imagery and meaning, encouraging close-looking and contemplation. Materson’s work tells a story of resilience and renewal, transforming personal hardship into objects of beauty and contemplation.
