About the Artwork

Wong was a part of a vibrant community in Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the late 1970s. The neighborhood and its diverse, eclectic population of artists and creatives became the subjects of his instantly-recognizable paintings, including this work in our collection. In his paintings, Wong explores themes of identity, multilingualism, and his queer sexuality with poetic imagery drawn from historic architecture, American Sign Language, and graffiti.
