About the Artwork
Andy Warhol was a relentless chronicler of life and the people around him. Carrying a Polaroid camera from the late 1950s until his death in 1987, Warhol amassed a huge collection of instant pictures which he assembled into photo albums he dubbed “Little Red Books”. These images of French fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent come from December 1971. The friends, who were both particularly shy, shared many similarities including their respective roles in changing the fashion and values of their time. Both men openly expressed their queer identity in their lives and art, even when homosexuality was criminalized and suppressed.
