Artist-Led Workshop: Botanical Inks with Gabrielle Eisma

Saturday, May 16, 2026
10:30 am — 4:00 pm

Connect with the natural world through art in this all day workshop led by illustrator, fine artist, and botanical ink maker Gabrielle Eisma. In this workshop participants will explore how materials from the land can become the medium for your artwork.

Gabrielle will guide you through making your own botanical inks using native plants, invasive buckthorn branches, and bark collected in partnership with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. Then, she will demonstrate the process of creating lake pigments and transforming the color of your inks using substances like alum and lemon juice, allowing you to experiment with a variety of hues and effects.

Participants will visit The Matter of Awe: Landscapes in Art to find inspiration and sketch landscapes in the gallery, then return to GRAM Studio to bring your landscape painting to life using your finished botanical inks. Gabrielle will teach techniques for applying and layering inks, resulting in a rich, personalized interpretation of the landscapes that inspire you.

Please note: There will be an hour long lunch break. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or enjoy an offsite lunch in downtown Grand Rapids.
