Donna Castellanos, Bertha, I’d like to know where you got the notion, Fabric, zippers, pin cushions, snaps, paper packaging, knitting needles, and other sewing notions, 2020 Collection of the artist © Donna Castellanos
Join artist Donna Castellanos as you create a portrait in fabric inspired by her piece, Bertha, I’d like to know where you got the notion on view in The Outwin: American Portraiture Today.
Composed of zippers, pins, threads, knitting needles, and other sewing “notions,” Castellano’s Bertha is a portrait of the artist’s grandmother. Anything but domestic or passive, Bertha stands inside her home in full ownership of her own inclinations and notions. Passing down a love of needlecraft and textiles to her daughters and Castellanos, Bertha’s enduring legacy is told through found objects lovingly stitched together by the artist, her mother, and aunts.
During this exclusive two-hour experience, guests will explore Donna’s process first-hand. Guests will begin in the galleries with an artist-led chat, then head over to GRAM Studio to sew, glue, and assemble your own portrait using the techniques and methods Donna used to create Bertha!
