Artist-led Workshop: Mineral Painting with Lian Yang

Thursday, Sep 26, 2024
5:00 pm — 8:00 pm

Join artist Lian Yang in GRAM Studio for an evening of hands-on artmaking inspired by the Tang Dynasty.

Deeply fascinated by crystal particles, Lian Yang began exploring mineral painting, a process which involves using crushed rocks as paint to create an image. This traditional Chinese painting technique was commonly used to paint murals, screens, and statues before the Tang Dynasty, but slowly fell out of regular use after the Song Dynasty as ink painting grew in popularity. Determined not to let this medium fade, Yang founded the China Academy of Mineral Color and teaches courses on mineral painting at Sichuan University of Culture and Arts in China.

Explore the ancient technique of mineral painting as you create your own painting on an 8x10 board with guidance from Lian Yang during this exclusive, three-hour artist-led workshop. All materials are provided.
