Gathering Light: The Jack H. Miller Glass Collection
The Grand Rapids Art Museum is honored to present a memorial exhibition celebrating the life, vision, and generosity of longtime supporter Jack H. Miller.
Centered on his promised gift of ten works of glass art, establishing The Jack H. Miller Glass Collection, the presentation brings together significant examples by artists such as Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Toots Zynsky, and Harvey K. Littleton, among others. These works illuminate the expressive range of contemporary studio glass, a movement that combines art, science, and technological innovation to harness glass as a form of creative expression. The works in this exhibition utilize numerous techniques, including blown, hot-sculpted, fused, cut, and polished glass. Unlike any other artistic medium, glass can transmit, absorb, or refract light. It can be transparent, translucent, or opaque and is at once delicate and strong, visible and invisible. The artists in the Jack H. Miller Glass Collection have redefined glass as a creative medium, transforming sand and heat into extraordinary works of art.
