Grand Rapids Art Museum Receives First Ever State Appropriations for Infrastructure Upgrades

The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) has been awarded $2 million from the State of Michigan to support important infrastructure upgrades to its landmark building in downtown Grand Rapids. This historic funding marks the first time GRAM has received state appropriations funding in its more than 100-year history and highlights the Museum’s role as a cultural anchor and civic gathering place at the heart of the city. 

This award comes at a pivotal moment as GRAM prepares to mark the 20th anniversary of its nationally recognized building at 101 Monroe Center in 2027. Since opening in October 2007 as the world’s first LEED® Gold certified art museum, the building set a new standard for sustainable cultural design.   

“We are deeply grateful to our state leaders for this investment in the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and by extension, in downtown Grand Rapids,” said GRAM Director and CEO Cindy Foley. “These upgrades ensure our building remains a welcoming and inspiring space for all and help lay the foundation for future investments that propel us toward an even brighter future.” 

The award received bipartisan support in the state legislature, reflecting a shared understanding of GRAM’s importance to the region: as an educational hub, an economic driver, and a place where art connects people across backgrounds and generations. 

The state funds will address infrastructure needs directly tied to improving the visitor experience, including upgrades to the building’s floor grates, lighting, and security systems. These upgrades complement private fundraising efforts that have supported recent improvements to the Museum’s building. Together, these public and private investments support GRAM as a catalyst for downtown vitality today and well into the future.
