About the Artwork
Drawing on and subverting influences from modernism, Judy Ledgerwood challenges the male-dominated genre of abstraction by creating bright, stylized patterns in her print, painting, and pottery work.
This print illustrates the vibrant, floral patterns often present in Ledgerwood’s art. Inspired by women artists from cultures around the world, as well as from symbols of Paleo and Neolithic goddesses, Ledgerwood describes these patterns as “womanly ciphers symbolic of feminine power.”
In reclaiming images, colors, and shapes considered to be stereotypically “feminine” in her work, Ledgerwood rejects masculine notions of self-seriousness and channels her creative outlook through topics like female sexuality, glamour, and pop culture.
