About the Artwork
Jane Freilicher produced paintings strongly influenced by American abstraction, but dedicated herself to depicting recognizable imagery in her work, predominantly landscapes, still lifes, and interiors. Peonies on a Table is a complex hybrid of still-life and city scene that bears the influence of Abstract Expressionism, then the dominant style of painting in New York City, as well as the vibrant, light and pattern infused works of French artists such as Bonnard and Matisse. Seemingly casual and technically challenging, Peonies on a Table epitomizes Freilicher’s approach to making art for the rest of her career.
