About the Artwork

Rufino Tamayo was a key figure in bringing worldwide attention to Mexican art in the mid-20th century. A painter and muralist, he created unique personal imagery drawn both from modern art and Pre-Columbian and Pre-Hispanic art.

Tamayo created more than 300 prints during his lifetime, both in black and white and in striking combinations of colors. This lithograph demonstrates his keen interest in the imagery and materials of the Mayans and other native Mexican cultures. The two female figures recall ancient pictographs carved into a rock surface.
