Alfield Reeves: In Case You Didn’t Know

This installation features seven large-scale portraits of Black and brown Grand Rapidians whose contributions to the city have gone largely unrecognized — neighbors, workers, elders, and organizers whose work has helped shape the community. 

Presented at street level and free to view, the work is designed to reach the pedestrians, commuters, and downtown visitors who pass by each day. No ticket or museum entry is required. 

Reeves is an award-winning editorial, portrait, and fine art photographer based in Grand Rapids. Originally from Liberia, West Africa, he creates images that encourage self-reflection and expression while highlighting the identity and culture of the communities he photographs. His work — often described as warm, quiet, and bold — moves between portraiture, photojournalism, and fashion. 

Often beginning with people we pass by every day and the ones already in our lives, the fabric of our communities is interwoven with how personal journeys can impact our collective present and future. These individuals are part of that tapestry.

Curated by the curiosity of their stories and the desire to shine a light on others, In Case You Didn’t Know explores how everyday life holds extraordinary depth. From artists and activists to environmental stewards and entrepreneurs, each portrait demands attention, not just for its presence and posture but for the stories behind them. 

The reclamation of one’s body.

The power of a promise.
And the hope for home. 

Pairing each portrait with a soundbite from their story gives the viewer a glimpse into their narrative, while leaving them wanting more. Together, they trace the threads between identity, resilience, and purpose, revealing how an individual life can ripple out into a community.
