Jan 18, 2024 — Apr 28, 2024
Level 2 Hunting Gallery

A cinematic assemblage of landscape, poetry, and sound merge in Sky Hopinka’s Mnemonics of Shape and Reason (2021).

Commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, this work engages with the artist’s memory of a place and time, overlaying atmospheric auras and piercing imagery with poetry to create an evocative meditation on spirituality, colonial devastation, selfhood, and Indigeneity.

Sky Hopinka (b. 1984, Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington. He is a filmmaker, photographer, and video artist who received a BA from Portland State University (2012) and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee (2016). Beginning in fall 2023, Hopinka will be Assistant Professor at Harvard University.
