About the Exhibition

Why shouldn’t I be proud to be a woman?… I’m convinced the future is ours.” –Rosa Bonheur

The Future is Ours: An Unfinished History of Women Artists at GRAM honors the enduring creativity and vital contributions of women artists across four centuries. Spanning continents and generations, the exhibition brings together, paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, and video in a richly layered exploration of artistic practice shaped in the face of social, economic, and cultural barriers. Rather than eschewing a single narrative, the exhibition offers a constellation of voices, each work bearing witness to resilience, innovation, and the persistent reimagining of what art can be.

This exhibition reflects a decade of intentional collecting at GRAM, including recent acquisitions and transformative gifts that have significantly deepened the museum’s holdings of work by women artists — particularly artists of color and those working in underrepresented mediums. It also acknowledges frankly what the collection does not yet hold, framing those gaps as invitations: to future collectors, future acquisitions, and a future in which museums like GRAM hold a truer account of art history.

Art is a mirror. It reflects what we cannot say in words.” –Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian

The Future is Ours: An Unfinished History of Women Artists at GRAM is organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum and curated by Jennifer Wcisel, Dean and Helga Toriello Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, and Terra Warren, Associate Curator.
