The Glen W. Johnson and Thomas P. Merchant Collection

Sep 5, 2026 — Feb 7, 2027
Level 1 Galleries

The Grand Rapids Art Museum is honored to present an exhibition celebrating the Glen W. Johnson and Thomas P. Merchant Collection — an influential gift that strengthens GRAM’s holdings of postwar and contemporary art.

About the Exhibition

Drawn from gifts and promised gifts to the collection, the show brings together prints, photographs, and multiples from approximately 1960 to 2015 by artists such as Kara Walker, Lorna Simpson, John Baldessari, Robert Rauschenberg, Jenny Holzer, Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, David Salle, and Michigan artist Michael Pfleghaar, among others. The installation highlights the collectors’ keen eye for visual language — where images, texts, and ideas intersect — across movements from Modern and Conceptual art to contemporary photography and abstraction.

This collection of nearly 100 art works was gifted to the museum by Thomas P. Merchant after the death of Glen W. Johnson in 2022. Remembered for his intellect, humor, and unwavering advocacy, Johnson believed that purposeful giving would be his legacy. The Grand Rapids Art Museum gratefully acknowledges Merchant and Johnson’s vision as well as their support through financial gifts and volunteerism. They believed that personal art collections should be gifted for the enjoyment of others. This generosity strengthens GRAM’s collection, expands educational opportunities, and ensures that future generations encounter art that inspires curiosity, dialogue, and belonging.
